I retrofitted my HF mini mill using the CNC Fusion conversion kit and the Xylotex stepper motors with driver.  I recommend the plug-and-play version of the Xylotex - it truly is plug-and-play and was incredibly simple to install.  Both products truly surpassed all my expectations.  I use Mach3 for the software controller and Powerstation Xpert for the CAM.  It is not 3D, however, imports DXF files easily from Alibre Design. A good book on CNC programming is CNC Programming Handbook, 2nd Edition by Peter Smid.
